Nigeria qualify for World Cup in Russia

Uyo Nigeria’s national football team has qualified for the sixth time for the World Cup finals. The Super Eagles defeated Zambia 1-0 (0-0) on Group B’s penultimate day and extended their lead to an unassailable six points.

FC Arsenal’s Alexander Iwobi (73rd) scored the goal for the 1996 Olympic champion, making Nigeria a regular guest at the World Cup since 1994 – with the exception of the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In addition to hosts Russia, defending champions Germany, Belgium, England, Spain, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Brazil had already won tickets to the 2018 World Cup. New Arsenal Manager Faced with Uphill Task

Taking over a top Premier League club like Arsenal, with a new stadium, great reputation and money to spend should be a huge proposition for an incoming manager.

The infrastructure is in place for Arsenal to succeed at the highest level, as they have done in the past thanks to outgoing manager, Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman has transformed the Gunners during his long spell at the club and lifted major trophies along the way, including the Premier League means the magazine

Arsenal Slump

However, the 3-1 loss at Leicester City in Arsenal’s penultimate league game of these season highlights what a massive job the new manager has at the Emirates Stadium.  The defeat at Leicester City means Arsenal have failed to pick up a single point away from home in 2018, which is a dreadful record for a club regarded as one of the best in English football.

Many of the fans have become disillusioned with life under Wenger and star players such as Mesut Ozil, have failed to deliver when it matter most.

The group of players Wenger leaves behind at Arsenal look bereft of confidence and many of the fans feel the same way.  However, when the Frenchman walks out of the door for the final time this weekend, he will leave a huge hole at the club.

New Backroom

Over the past 12 months, Arsenal have added two key men to their backroom staff, with Sven Mislintat arriving from Borussia Dortmund as head of recruitment and Raul Sanllehi from Barcelona as head of football relations.

Whoever comes into the managerial hot seat at Arsenal will be working with Mislintat and Sanllehi and it remains to be seen just how the club will be structured next season.

When Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United, the Red Devils struggled to find a suitable replacement and even with Jose Mourinho in charge, the title is out of reach. However, when David Moyes took charge he had a title winning team to work with, something the new Arsenal manager will not. The odds stands good for a change. (read here more)

Ferguson was said to have had a big say in the appointment of Manchester United’s new manager and it was announced before the end of the season.  It appears Arsenal do not have anyone lined up and have little idea about the style of manager they would like to appoint.

Potential Candidates

Former players who worked under Wenger during his most successful period at Arsenal, Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry, have both been linked with the job but would be a huge risk considering their lack of experience.

Luis Enrique has been tipped as a potential option but his wages appear to be a stumbling block. Current Juventus manager, Max Allegri is another big-name manager to be linked with the job but he may stay with the Turin giants and would also prove an expensive option.

With Chelsea also on the look-out for a new manager as they line-up a replacement for Antonio Conte, Arsenal could be in for a difficult time this summer.  Success may have been thin on the ground under Wenger in recent years but there could be worse to come for Arsenal fans.

Racing Tips: Three for Thursday

Not long until the flat season proper kicks off now, with Saturday’s Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster being the traditional curtain raiser. I’ll stick to the flat for the best bets from Thursdays cards, with a couple in the novice contests catching the eye in addition to a rapidly improving filly on Chelmsford’s card.

Wolverhampton 5:25 Brockey Rise @ 15/2 with BetVictor

The most interesting runner here is Ed Walker’s Global Excel on handicap debut. Whilst the booking of Silvestre De Sousa certainly catches the eye, he looks far from thrown in off a mark of 69 on what he has shown to date. He may well improve dramatically for this step down in trip and switch to handicapping, but he will need to. Having been made favourite for this he is there to be taken on.

The one to side with is course and distance winner Brockey Rise. It wasn’t a great race that this one won last time out over this track and trip, but it nevertheless continued his sequence of improved performances of late. Rated 70 in his juvenile days, he gets in at the foot of the weights here on a mark of 61. He will need to improve for that win 27 days ago, but he was notably strong at the line that day, and looks to have been overlooked a little in the market for David Evans.

Chelmsford 7:45 Jaalboot @ 10/1 with BetVictor

Things haven’t quite gone to plan for the £130,000 purchase Jaalboot. So much so that he has subsequently been sold and shipped from the Owen Burrows yard to that of Mark Johnston. I am perfectly happy to forgive his two runs to date though. Firstly he was only beaten seven lengths on debut at Wolverhampton, despite losing at least that when blowing the start. Next time he did pretty well to only go down by 3¾l at Brighton considering he appeared to be all at sea on the good to firm going that day. Looking back at his debut run his action certainly seems far more suited to synthetics. Having also been gelded since last being seen at the track 254 days ago it would be no surprise should he put up a much improved display here. There’s always the chance he may just need this outing but at the price he’s still worth chancing.

Chelmsford 8:15 Good Business @ 2/1 with Sky Bet

My final bet of the day comes in this handicap contest for the fillies. Temeraire will likely give it a good go from the front, whilst Mythical Spirit won nicely over course and distance last time out. Not quite so nicely as the Henry Spiller runner, Good Business though. This daughter of Dutch Art has shown marked improvement this term, winning both of her starts in 2018, both times over this course and distance, and looking to have plenty left in the tank on each occasion. She is up 7lbs for that latest success, but with Spiller calling on the services of capable 5lb claimer, William Cox, she is effectively only 2lbs higher for a three-length success and looks well in. Inter Keep Pressure on Top Two in Serie A

This weekend will see the sixth round of matches in Serie A and the table is already beginning to take shape, with Napoli and Juventus leading, closely followed by Inter Milan.

This Sunday Inter Milan welcome Genoa to the San Siro in a match they must win if they want to keep the pressure on the top two in Serie A.  A top four finish must be the aim this season and to achieve that aim, Inter Milan must win matches like this one.

Inter Milan Form

Inter Milan dropped their first points of the season in mid-week and they were held to a 1-1 draw at Bologna.  It wasn’t a great performance by Inter Milan as they needed a late Mauro Icardi penalty to rescue a point.

Prior to the draw in Bologna on Tuesday night, Inter Milan had enjoyed a 100% start to the campaign.  They picked up home wins against Fiorentina and SPAL and away wins at Crotone and Roma, the latter of which was an excellent 3-1 victory.

Inter Milan have won both home matches without conceding a goal this season and will be hoping to maintain that record come the final whistle of this match.

Genoa Form

Genoa have found life tough in Serie A at the start of this season and start the weekend just one place above the relegation zone.  They have yet to win a match and a trip to the San Siro to play an undefeated Inter Milan team is not ideal.

The 0-0 draw at the start of the season was a decent result and gave Genoa something on which to build but they then fell to 3 successive defeats in Serie A.

The first was 4-2 at home to Juventus and while not disastrous, Genoa then lost 1-0 at Udinese and 3-2 at home to Lazio.  In mid-week Genoa welcomed Chievo Verona to the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris but again failed to pick up the win in a 1-1 draw.

Genoa’s problem has been defensively and having kept a clean sheet on the opening day of the season have gone on to concede 9 goals, 7 of which have come at home.

Team News

Inter Milan are without Joao Cancelo but he is the only absentee and they should be close to full strength.  Eder could come into the team to replace Joao Mario who did not perform well at Bologna in mid-week.

Genoa travel without the suspended Armando Izzo and injured Gianluca Lapadula.  Young goal scoring sensation Pietro Pellegri is set to start the game up-front.

Top Betting Tips

Despite dropping points at Bologna in mid-week, Inter Milan have looked good this season and much stronger than their opponents Genoa.  Inter Milan are available at 3/10 with Marathon bet to win this game. Find here a current Marathonbet review.

Inter Milan have conceded just 2 goals in 5 games this season and Genoa struggle when it comes to scoring goals away from home.  In fact, they have managed only 2 in their last 7 away Serie A games and they both came in the same match.

You can get 11/10 with William Hill for Inter Milan to win the match to nil.

Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi has 6 goals in 5 Serie A games this season and will be confident of adding to his tally in this match.  The Argentine is 11/4 with William Hill to score the first goal of the game.

Football Betting Tips: Aston Villa vs Hull City

Two of the favourites for promotion from the EFL Championship meet at Villa Park on Saturday evening with both teams looking to get off to a flying start in the 2017/18 season.

Sky Bet Championship – Aston Villa vs Hull City 05/06/17.

Kick off 17:30 GMT Villa Park

  • Aston Villa – Best Odds 21/20 (BetVictor)
  • Hull City – Best Odds 10/3 (Bet365)
  • Draw – Best Odds 5/2 (BetFair)

Aston Villa

One man has dominated Aston Villa’s pre-season and that is John Terry. The talismanic former England captain has joined the Villains from Chelsea and has been charged with leading them back to the promised land of the Premier League.

In Steve Bruce, Villa have an experienced manager at Championship level and their fans will be hoping with a full pre-season under his belt, he can progress from last year’s 13th place finish. Bruce has strengthened massively with the arrivals of Terry, Glenn Whelan (from Stoke), Ahmed Elmohamady (from Hull), Sam Johnstone (from Manchester United) and Christopher Samba (on a free transfer).

All of the players mentioned have vast amounts of experience in English football and this coupled with Villa’s young prospects like Jack Grealish and Jonathan Kodja could be the recipe for success in 2017/18.

Hull City

Relegation from the Premier League is not an unfamiliar feeling for Hull City fans and neither is uncertainty around the club and unfortunately for them, they appear to be stepping into a season of the unknown once again. Marco Silva’s best efforts to keep them up last season were in vein but landed him a job at Premier League Watford, meaning Leonid Slutski has been tasked with plotting their route back to the top division.

Big names have departed the KCOM stadium over the summer with Curtis Davies & Tom Huddlestone departing for Derby County, Harry Maguire & Eldin Jakupovic have left for a combined £13.5 million to Leicester City whilst Andrew Robertson has joined Liverpool for nearly £8 million.

Slutski has overseen the removal of the nucleus of the squad and began to replace the big name departures – Kevin Stewart has arrived from Liverpool and the prolific Frazier Campbell has joined from Crystal Palace – but he will be hoping he can continue to strengthen the team before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

Head to Head

Aston Villa comfortably lead the head to head 18:6 with 7 competitive draws between the teams. Hull did manage to win the last meeting between the teams though with a 2-0 victory at the KC Stadium in the premier league back in February 2015.

Odds and Predictions

Early season games are always hard to judge but the effective looking recruitment coupled with the optimism around the club gives Aston Villa good reason to be favourites at 21/10 with Bet Victor. Hull could offer good value at 10/3 with Bet 365 whilst these two closely matched teams could well draw at 5/2 with Betfair. More Bookies you will find on this site.

The ‘Draw No Bet’ market offers a chance to back Aston Villa at odds of 2/5 or Hull at 21/10, with the security of not losing your money the game finishes as a draw. (

The timing of this fixture in the season means it’s very hard to judge the approach both teams will adopt but Aston Villa will surely be looking to cash in on home advantage and take points off a promotion rival in the process. Villa to be leading at Half Time and Full Time is a tempting 5/2 with BetVictor and with their defensive reinforcements backing Villa to win to nil is 21/10 with UniBet could be a savvy bet.

Top Betting Tip

Our top betting tip for this match is for Aston Villa to keep a clean sheet at 11/8. Find here a Betfred Review from

Betting Tip: Arsenal vs Leicester City

The Premier League kicks off on Friday night, with Arsenal hosting 2015/16 Champions Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium.

Having defeated Chelsea on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, Arsenal get their Premier League campaign underway at home to Leicester City. New signing Alexandre Lacazette will lead the line for the Gunners, however the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey are major injury concerns for Arsene Wenger ahead of the match. The trio add to long term absentees including Santi Cazorla, Gabriel Paulista and Jack Wilshere, with the likes of Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi looking to fill in in their absence. Having finished fifth in the Premier League standings at the end of last season, Wenger is under pressure to deliver this time around, with the Frenchman having signed a new two-year contract in North London. The Gunners will be hoping to transfer their pre-season form into the regular campaign, as they hunt a first top-flight title since 2004.

Leicester City

The 2015/16 Premier League champions finished in mid-table last time round, despite having once looked destined for relegation, with Craig Shakespeare having seemingly made vast improvements during his time in charge. A trip to the Emirates is certainly not the easiest of starts for the Foxes, especially with both Robert Huth and Danny Drinkwater missing out through injury. As a result, new signings Harry Maguire and Vicente Iborra look set to make their competitive debuts for the club. Meanwhile, Riyad Mahrez is set to feature despite the fact that the Algerian is looking for a move away from the club.

Head to Head

Arsenal have not lost a Premier League encounter to Leicester City since back in 1994, with the Gunners having claimed four points off of the Foxes last season. Since losing to Leicester in the 2000 FA Cup, Arsenal have won eight of the 12 meetings between the two sides, drawing the remaining four. Leicester failed to score a single goal in the two Premier League fixtures last season, however they have certainly caused Arsenal problems in years gone by.

Betting Odds and Predictions

Given the fact that Arsenal have not lost a Premier League encounter with Leicester since 1994, backing the home side to either win or draw against Leicester on Friday night could well be worth backing, with Tipico offering best odds of 1/9 for this market.

Meanwhile, with the Gunners having kept two clean sheets against the Foxes last season too, backing them to repeat this trick on the opening day of the season is worth a look, with William Hill offering odds of 6/4 for them to shut Leicester out for 90 minutes.

Finally, given the attacking talent on display at the Emirates, many are predicting a goal fest on Friday night, with the likes of Lacazette and Jamie Vardy likely to be the main threats. As a result, backing both teams to score at odds of 4/6 is worth considering.

Top Betting Tip

Despite offering some great tips already, our top betting tip for the match is to back both teams to score and Arsenal to win, which can be found at best odds of 15/8 at Bet365.
